Annotatsiya

This article examines audiovisual translation with particular attention to subtitling as a constrained, multimodal form of interlingual transfer. The research focuses on selected English-Russian subtitle examples from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 and analyses how omission, addition, semantic narrowing, register shift, cultural substitution and quantitative inaccuracy influence the viewer's reception of meaning. The study applies qualitative comparative analysis: the English source subtitle is compared with the Russian subtitle at the level of lexical choice, pragmatic force, cultural reference and time-bound subtitle compression. The results show that even generally understandable subtitles may alter tone, emotional intensity and semantic scope when the translator simplifies colloquial expressions, domesticates religious formulas, adds interpretive material or compresses technical expressions. The findings confirm that subtitling quality depends not only on linguistic equivalence but also on timing, readability, cultural adaptation and preservation of filmic intention.
