The article presents a thorough research of the role of conceptual metaphor in shaping the concept of narcissism in Wendy T. Behary’s book “Disarming the Narcissist”. The study is focused on investigating how metaphorical language serves as a tool aiding the comprehension of the concept of narcissism. The tool joins the two notions: complex clinical term and everyday use of the phenomenon. Narcissism, which was previously understood as a medical term and diagnosis, is analysed and structured by means of metaphorical mappings that helps interpret certain psychology related processes providing source and target domains. Through qualitative analysis of metaphorical expressions in the text, the study identifies a network of dominant conceptual metaphors, including NARCISSISM AS ARMOR OR SHIELD, NARCISSISM AS A FRAGILE OBJECT OR A STRUCTURE, NARCISSISM AS ADDICTION OR OBSSESSION, NARCISSISM AS EMPTINESS, NARCISSISM AS A WHOLE CONTROL SYSTEM, and NARCISSISM AS PERFORMANCE OR A GAME. Moreover, secondary metaphors were also studied and analysed such as NARCISSISM AS A CHILDHOOD WOUND OR TRAUMA, NARCISSISM AS BARRIER, and RELATIONSHIP WITH A NARCISSISTIC PARTNER AS A WAR OR BATTLEFIELD have also been researched. The findings of this research demonstrate that these metaphors do not simply depict the concept of narcissism but also form the conceptual framework through which experienced or unexperienced readers interpret narcissistic mind, behavior and relationships. Secondly, metaphorical framing fulfils the therapeutic or healing goals by clarifying the situation of confusion caused by the narcissists. To some degree, it is promoting understanding the origin, causes, effects and consequences of narcissistic abuse. The article claims that conceptual metaphor is not a mere stylistic device but a central cognitive and discursive tool in modern self-help literature and motivational books. The results of this analysis contributes and enriches the understanding of psychology, cognitive linguistics, lingvocuturology, sociology and other relevant branches.
