С тех пор, как человек начал использовать инструменты в повседневной жизни, он начал заботиться о своих зубах, об их чистоте и здоровье. В древние времена были достигнуты значительные успехи в этой области. В начале VI века до н.э. этруски (нынешняя территория Греции) уже знали, как конструировать протезы из золота и зубов крупного рогатого скота; 2200 лет назад в Китае лечили волчью пасть, а пророк Мухаммед в VII веке ввел основы гигиены полости рта в ритуальную систему ислама [4].
