This article addresses one of the long-standing and still unresolved issues in the numismatics of Central Asia — the study of the so-called «Bukharhudat-type» coins. After outlining the main approaches to interpreting the nature of these dirhams, the paper reviews various attempts to clarify references to these coins in manuscript sources. It is evident that methods of textual analysis alone cannot fully resolve the problem. At present, the only truly productive direction is the continued systematic recording of new hoard finds, including detailed metrological documentation of coin assemblages, and the application of die analysis and natural scientific methods of metal investigation. However, the latter approach remains problematic, as practice has shown that the use of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis in numismatics does not yield consistently reliable or unequivocal results. Therefore, expanding the source base remains the most effective strategy for further research on this coin type. Following the work of B. D. Kochnev, the list of Bukharhudat dirham hoards from Central Mavarannahr has been extended through the addition of four more hoard complexes discovered at the Afrasiab site.
