This article analyzes the theories, features of the theory, and elements of separation of powers. Opinions were expressed that the concept of "function" in the doctrine is used to characterize the social role of the state and law. In addition, the function is associated with the directed selective impact of the system (structure, whole) on certain aspects of the external environment. The works of scientists on the definition of the nature of the concepts "function of the state", "function of law", "function of the judiciary" from the point of view of scientists' opinions on this issue are studied. Suggestions are given for dividing the functions of the judiciary into external and internal (intra-system) ones. An important task is to identify the specific features of justice.
