Selecting a design for a small centrifugal hydroelectric power plant is a pressing issue. The aim of this study is to characterize the performance of pumps as turbines through experimental and numerical studies. In this article, the experimental results are analyzed and compared with numerical analogs of the characteristics of the forward (pump) and reverse (turbine) modes. Establishing a correlation is essential for selecting a pump design. The methodology is based on numerical calculations of unsteady three-dimensional hydrodynamic models of centrifugal pumps (ns<60 (m³/s)) in turbine mode. Experimental data include calculated predictions of the pump’s maximum efficiency operating point in turbine mode.
