The article is devoted to the analysis of the formation and development of scholarly views on parenthetical-modal words and constructions in two linguistic traditions. It examines the main stages in the study of this category in the works of Russian and Uzbek linguists, from the pre-revolutionary period to contemporary concepts. Special attention is paid to the interpretation of the notions of modality, parentheticality, and the subjective evaluation of an utterance, as well as to the differentiation between parenthetical words, particles, and modal components. The article analyzes the approaches of leading representatives of the Russian linguistic school, including the ideas of Viktor Vinogradov and Aleksey Shakhmatov, who had a significant influence on the formation of the theory of modality. It also highlights the contribution of Uzbek scholars to the study of parenthetical-modal units, their structural-semantic and functional features in the Uzbek language. The comparative aspect of the research makes it possible to identify both general trends in the description of these units and specific features determined by typological differences between the languages. The article concludes by emphasizing the importance of the historical-linguistic approach for a deeper understanding of the nature of parenthetical-modal means and their role in the organization of an utterance.
