Hope as Light, Fear as Force: A Target-Domain Analysis of Source Domains in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings

Studies of literary metaphor usually begin from striking source-domain images and so miss how a text conceptualises its central abstractions. This article takes the opposite route. All occurrences of the lexemes naming six target domains (HOPE, FEAR, DESPAIR, GRIEF, POWER and EVIL) were retrieved from the full narrative of The Lord of the Rings (476,607 words). A random sample of 172 nominal tokens was coded with MIPVU for source domain, following the logic of metaphorical pattern analysis. Four targets are metaphorically construed in about four of five uses, grief in about half, and evil rarely, because evil is mostly adjectival. The targets share a background of space, motion and life, but each has a distinctive profile. Hope is a faint light and a fragile possession, and light is attested for no other target (p < .001). Fear and despair are forces and assailants, grief is the contents of a container, and power is a possession that is held, wielded and worn. Negative emotions are construed as agents far more often than hope (OR = 6.54, p = .011). EVIL is rarely construed as darkness; darkness belongs instead to evil beings and places. The study argues that target-driven analysis is a necessary complement to source-driven inventories of literary metaphor.
