Vitamin D deficiency is usually caused by insufficient synthesis of the vitamin in the body due to insufficient sun exposure and/or a decrease in the synthetic properties of the skin with age. Persistent, severe vitamin D deficiency leads to bone demineralization with the clinical picture of rickets in children or osteomalacia in adults. In addition to the effects on bone, there is extensive experimental and epidemiological evidence that low levels of vitamin D are associated with numerous extraosseous effects. The role of vitamin D in the regulation of the expression of insulin receptors and insulin secretion has been experimentally proven, and a positive effect on the central nervous, endocrine and immune systems, as well as on cell differentiation and growth, has been established. The positive effects of vitamin D on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems remain largely controversial. A correlation between the severity of periodontitis and low levels of 25(OH)-vitamin D has been proven. This suggests a connection between low levels of vitamin D and the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases and its progression. D-hypovitaminosis can cause loss of dental implants.
