In this article, based on the analysis of sources over the past 20 years in domestic and foreign publications, materials of scientific conferences, targeted reports of various government bodies and information in scientific sources on Scopus, PubMed, Direct and other sites, data on the prevalence of diabetes mellitus are presented. , the increase in the incidence of it among various segments of the population, as well as the phenomenon of "rejuvenation" of diabetes mellitus, the etiological significance of environmental factors that doctors have not previously taken into account, as well as their role and place in the formation of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus are discussed. The risk factors leading to the formation of diabetes mellitus, the causes of their occurrence and the role of social and hygienic measures in their prevention, measures leading to a decrease in the incidence, as well as their characteristics are identified.
