In this article, social determinants of book reading are presented as a result of scientific and theoretical conclusions. Particular attention is paid not only to the cultural and spiritual aspects of reading, but also to its social stratification, status and role features. In addition, the article also emphasizes the social significance of reading at the macro-, meso- and microsocial levels. Classifications of permitted and prohibited reading are also provided, focused on mass and elite, young and professional groups, based on the opinions of modern researchers. In addition, based on scientific and theoretical findings, it was revealed that its determinants are the ideological, compulsory, communicative, entertaining and leisure functions of reading.
