El artículo propone una unidad didáctica orientada a estudiantes universitarios japoneses de nivel medio-avanzado de español, con el objetivo de fomentar tanto el desarrollo lingüístico como la competencia intercultural. A partir de la comparación entre dos manifestaciones culturales emblemáticas – el sumo japonés y la fiesta de los toros en España – se muestra cómo culturas aparentemente distantes pueden revelar sorprendentes puntos de encuentro cuando se analizan desde una perspectiva abierta y contextualizada. El texto aborda el origen ritual y simbólico del sumo, así como la evolución histórica y artística de la tauromaquia, destacando su papel identitario en cada país. La propuesta metodológica incluye actividades de lectura, análisis léxico, discusión guiada y ejercicios humorísticos para reforzar la comprensión cultural. La unidad subraya la importancia de adoptar una actitud positiva hacia la diversidad y de comprender que la distancia cultural depende, en gran medida, de la mirada y disposición del observador.
