Turkism is a term that is used to describe the vocabulary and words that derived from Turkic languages and are used in other languages. Finding turkisms from the works of foreign writers, comparing their etymology and learning the difference and similarities of these words with their meanings have been a significant research topic for plenty of researchers and philologists. This article gives information about the recent researches in this area and discusses the use of turkisms in literary works in Russian language. The given article is as well as concerned about the usage and frequency of words of Turkic origins in the works of Leo Tolstoy. The author chooses the works “Khajimurat” and “Caucasian captive” by Leo Tolstoy and discusses the use of turkic words and compares them with their original versions and their cognates in other languages. The etymology and classification of words derived from Turkic languages are thoroughly analysed and relevant examples are provided.
