The article examines how polysemy and homonymy operate in legal terminology and why the distinction matters for statutory interpretation and legal translation. Regular polysemy – such as court as institution/building/bench, act as document/action/statute, and case as proceeding/file – arises from systematic sense alternations predictable from genre and context, whereas homonymy introduces unrelated senses that can mislead readers and translators. Building on lexical semantics and the Generative Lexicon, the narrative shows how distributional and morphosyntactic cues (selectional preferences, frames, collocations) disambiguate legal terms, and why curated terminological resources remain essential. Examples from Russian, Uzbek, and English legal discourse demonstrate risks in contracts and procedural documents and offer mitigation strategies: explicit sense labeling, definitional drafting, and parallel-corpus checks. The conclusion argues that modeling polysemy as structure while guarding against homonymy reduces interpretive error and improves cross-lingual legal communication (Cruse, 2011; Tiersma, 2000; Cao, 2007; Šarčević, 1997).
