The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the main stages of the transformation of the 20th-century American novel, highlights key representatives of realism (e.g. Theodore Dreiser, William Faulkner) and postmodernism (e.g. Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo), and reveals the features of their creative searches. Particular attention is paid to the influence of social and historical factors on the development of literary styles and changes in the perception of reality in fiction. Thus, the study demonstrates how the 20th-century American novel reflects a complex dialogue between tradition and innovation, the desire for objectivity and the recognition of multiple meanings. The second half of the 20th century was marked by the development of postmodernism, a literary movement that rejected unambiguity and fixed norms of narration. The postmodernist novel is characterized by a fragmentary plot, polysemantic interpretations, play with words and genres, as well as an awareness of its own conventionality and textuality. American postmodern writers explored questions of identity, reality, and language, blurring the boundaries between “high” and “low” culture.
