Cognitive dissonance is a psychological phenomenon that we constantly encounter in our daily lives. The author, referring to linguistic studies of the issue of dissonance, studies cognitive dissonance from a linguist-stylistic perspective. The examples presented in the article are taken from the discourse of English literary prose, which not only illustrate cognitive dissonance, but also create a basis for classifying dissonance phenomena. The initial classification includes two groups - linguistic and non-linguistic, each of which is analyzed in detail by the author. The conclusion indicates the prospects for future research to further study the relationship of cognitive dissonance with linguistic mechanisms.
