The article examines the characteristics of ascetic practices in Islam according to the regions, in particular, as one of the important features distinguishing the Central Asian ascetic school from other Khorasan and Basra ascetic schools, it is noted that the main part of ascetics in it were representatives of socially active segments of the population – imams, qazis, and others who had the degree of muhaddith and faqih, therefore, internal asceticism (asceticism in the soul) - a state of asceticism in the soul while living a socially active life among people, was more common than external asceticism (bodily asceticism) - complete alienation from society and betrayal of extreme renunciation of the world.
