This article examines the functional features of negation in English, explores its syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects in order to reveal its crucial role in communication. Syntactically, negation forms the structure of a sentence with the help of markers such as "not", auxiliary verbs, and constructions similar to double negations, which bring variety and complexity to English grammar. Semantically, it changes meaning by introducing opposition, negation, or nuances and concepts such as negative polarity elements and implicit negation further expand its scope. From a practical point of view, negation promotes social interaction by allowing speakers to express disagreement, doubt, politeness, or alternative points of view, making it an important tool in discourse. The article, which includes cognitive and interlanguage aspects, highlights the processing problems associated with negation and its unique characteristics compared to other languages. Summarizing the ideas of linguistic theory, the study highlights the multifaceted nature of denial and offers valuable insights into education, communication strategies, and advances in computational linguistics.
