This research focuses on an in-depth study of the general concept, semantic properties, and structural structure of idioms in English. Idioms are the most important and integral part of any language, reflecting the cultural values, historical experience and national worldview of language owners. In this article, the structural typology of idioms in English is developed, and their semantic classification is also given. The study shows the results of the grouping of idioms according to the degree of transparency (transparent, translucent, non-transparent), according to semantic fields (such as the concept of human character, emotions, time). The role of metaphor and metonymy processes in the formation of idioms has also been analyzed. The results show that most of the idioms in English are formed on the basis of metaphorical displacement of meaning, which can be explained using conceptual metaphor theory. In addition, the cultural and historical basis of idioms has been studied and shown to be related to national identity. The study also explored etymological aspects of idioms in English, identifying links between their origins, historical development, and use in modern English. The paper also gives the results of Corpus analysis on the use of idioms in colloquial and written speech. With modern electronic bodies such as British national Corpus and Corpus of Contemporary American English, the frequency of application, contextual properties and discourse functions of idioms have been defined. In addition, different aspects of the idioms in English in the British and American variants have also been analyzed. In the course of the study, a comparative analysis of idioms in English with equivalents in other languages was carried out, and problematic aspects in translation were identified, and ways to solve them were proposed. In particular, the translation of idioms analyzed the four basic strategies - translation with an equivalent idiom, literal translation, translation by explaining the meaning, and dropping the idiom. The advantages and disadvantages of each strategy are detailed, as well as the conditions of application. In addition, the effects of cultural realities, national identity, and intercultural differences have also been explored in the translation of idioms.
