The article reflects the essence of distance learning and its key aspects. It is determined that distance learning using electronic technologies is widely used in the field of teaching foreign languages at the university. The potential of distance learning in language education, the roles of the teacher and student in distance learning are shown. The factors influencing the organization of the distance process of teaching foreign languages at the university are established. The methodological features of distance learning in reading, listening, speaking and writing are given. The methodological aspects of teaching English at the university in the context of distance learning are determined, recommendations are provided on the phased transition to distance learning of the English language. In addition, recommendations were made on creating educational materials taking into account students’ results in mass education.
