Today, in the process of teaching foreign languages, lexical competence (vocabulary and the ability to use it correctly in context) is crucial for both teachers and students. The formation and development of lexical competence are essential for teaching discursive skills, as the correct choice of words is necessary for the effective and accurate use of language, as well as for the clear and understandable expression of information. Lexical competence includes not only the expansion of vocabulary but also the ability to use words appropriately in various contexts. Teaching discursive skills aims at enabling students to express not only grammatically correct, but also meaningful and coherent thoughts. When studying a foreign language, a student must be able to organize communication correctly using lexical means, since language use is not merely a collection of words, but a means of conveying information in a coherent and precise manner. In foreign language teaching, it is essential to develop lexical competence not just for memorizing words, but also for studying the relationships between them and their appropriate use in context, as well as for an in-depth exploration of the pragmatic and discursive features of the language. This enables students to organize their speech effectively and communicate successfully in society. The discursive approach helps students engage in dialogue by taking into account various linguistic, lexical, and social contexts. This article analyzes the role of lexical competence in foreign language teaching and its connection to discursive skills. It discusses the challenges of expanding students’ vocabulary and effectively using it, as well as ways to overcome these challenges and the important methodological approaches in language learning.
