This article examines reading comprehension as a key element in helping students build their literary competencies. It argues that strong reading comprehension abilities are necessary for deeper engagement with literature and text decoding. Students improve their comprehension and appreciation of a variety of narratives by examining themes, characters, and cultural settings. Additionally, it highlights literal understanding, inferential understanding, and critical reading as the three main components of comprehension. Laying the groundwork for readers to comprehend texts explicitly, recognize key concepts, and remember particular details is known as literal understanding. Using background information and context to decipher underlying themes and intentions, inferential understanding builds on this foundation by enabling readers to conclude outside the text. Ultimately, critical reading develops analytical abilities by pushing readers to consider biases, weigh the text's arguments, and think critically. The paper contends that teachers can improve their students' literary competencies and foster both academic achievement and a lifetime appreciation of literature by including these understanding levels. The results underscore the need for focused reading techniques and instructional approaches that take these aspects into account, which will ultimately help to create a society that is more critically engaged and literate.
