The article discusses the psychological and methodological foundations of teaching foreign languages, based on the ideas of L.S. Vygotsky. The authors of the article argue that teaching should be aimed at developing students' thinking and speech, and not just at imparting knowledge to them. To do this, it is necessary to create conditions in which students will actively use the language in various communicative situations. The author of the article also offers a number of practical recommendations for implementing these ideas.
