Mathematical apparatus and software mechanisms for managing virtual machine migration in a cloud computing environment

This paper investigates the mathematical framework for managing VM migration in cloud environments. Pre-copy, post-copy and hybrid approaches are formalized, an automatic migration model is developed using a MDP. The main theoretical contribution is Theorem 1, which proves that the downtime advantage of the proposed HMA over standard pre-copy increases strictly monotonically with the dirtying coefficient α = λ/B and memory size M, yielding an a priori algorithm-selection rule. On a 6-node OpenStack cluster, HMA reduced downtime by 71% (2.14→0.62 s) and migration time from 34.7 to 18.4 s. Sensitivity analysis identified λ as the dominant factor (r = 0.93)
