Selenium and tellurium were long considered forgotten elements in medicine due to their toxicity; however, both elements are present in the human body and perform important biological functions. Tellurium is an electronic analog of oxygen, selenium, sulfur, and polonium. Both elements - selenium and tellurium - are classified as conditionally toxic substances: in small doses they can be beneficial, but in large doses they can be harmful. Selenium plays an important role in regulating the immune system, participating in the body's antioxidant defense. Tellurium, before the advent and widespread use of antibiotics, was used in medicine as an antibacterial agent.
