This article presents the results of archaeological research conducted at the sites of the ancient and early medieval periods in the Sokh Basin of the Fergana Valley (Uzbekistan). Analysis of the remains of ceramics and architectural structures discovered at the Tepakurgan site has shown that these settlements arose in the late II – early I centuries BC. The archaeological data obtained confirm that active processes of irrigated agriculture and urbanization have been taking place in the Sokh Valley since ancient times. Intensive exploitation of agricultural lands led to the formation of many settlements in various parts of the basin, especially in micro-oases. However, the long-term practice of irrigation in the lower part of the basin caused a rise in groundwater, swamping and salinization of lands, which in turn led to the abandonment of settlements at the end of the early Middle Ages and their relocation to the northwestern parts of the basin. The obtained results are an important source for future research in the Sokh Basin and other regions and contribute to a deeper understanding of the formation of ancient landscapes and urbanization processes in the Fergana Valley. The results of this research may provide a valuable source for further studies of Sokh Basin and beyond. And they were offering a deeper understanding of the formation of anthropogenic landscape and the development of urbanization in this area.
