The process of developing students' communicative competence is one of the important tasks not only in teaching their native language, but also in teaching foreign languages. In the process of studying the Russian language, which is one of the compulsory subjects in higher educational institutions, it was determined that the level of Russian language proficiency of students is assessed on the basis of their phonetic, lexical and grammatical knowledge. The article discusses that the main task of teaching students the Russian language is to develop the ability to work with text, and not just with individual sentences. The author of the article analyzed the phonetic, lexical and grammatical foundations, which are important areas for determining the level of language knowledge of students in the process of learning the Russian language, and proposed a number of recommendations for increasing the level of students' knowledge of the Russian language.
