This article examines the role of the United Nations in global environmental policy and governance, its institutional capacities, andmechanisms for responding to contemporary environmental challenges. The study analyzes the main stages of the formation anddevelopment of UN environmental policy, the activities of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), institutionalfragmentation in global environmental governance, and the specific features of the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement. Particularattention is given to the Sustainable Development Goals, the strengthening of the international legal foundations of environmental rights,and efforts to reinforce states’ environmental commitments.
