This article examines the historical development and contemporary transformation of English comic poetics from the sixteenth to the twenty-first century in the context of the Western comic tradition. The relevance of the study lies in the fact that previous research has largely focused on individual periods or authors, leaving the evolution of the genre’s poetics insufficiently examined as a whole. Drawing on historical-typological, genre-poetic, and discursive approaches, the study compares more than forty comedies in terms of comic conflict, character types, comic mechanisms, functions of laughter, and types of endings. The analysis identifies six stages in the development of English comedy and four major trends in its transformation: from corrective and conciliatory laughter to problematizing laughter; from the humour type to psychological characterization; from aristocratic wit to social and everyday humour; and from closed endings to open and absurd endings. The findings may contribute to the study of English literary history, comparative literature, and drama theory.
