This article examines the historical roots and geographical distribution of bel olish wrestling through written, archaeological and visual sources alongside materials from a 2023 field expedition. It reviews scholarly interpretations of Ordos bronze belt plaques, Panjikent murals, Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, Avicenna’s Canon of Medicine and historical illustrations. The reported regional distribution of the chalish (with leg trips) and chalishsiz (without leg trips) forms in Uzbekistan is systematized and compared with related wrestling traditions in Iran, Afghanistan, India and Georgia. The discussion distinguishes source-based observations from hypotheses of historical continuity.
