Teaching medical terminology through data-driven learning: a corpus-informed model for english for medical purposes

Medical students who study English for Medical Purposes need more than definitions of isolated technical terms. They must recognize how terminology functions in authentic clinical and academic discourse, including its frequency, collocations, phraseological patterns, grammatical behavior, and communicative purpose. This article develops a corpus-informed, data-driven learning (DDL) model for teaching medical terminology to university students. The study uses a structured analytical synthesis of established medical vocabulary studies, specialized-corpus research, and empirical DDL findings. Evidence from medical word lists, concordance-based instruction, collocation studies, and recent corpus-assisted interventions is compared to identify principles that can guide terminology selection and classroom practice. The results support five instructional priorities: frequency and range, contextual meaning, collocation, recurrent phraseology, and productive transfer. On this basis, a five-stage pedagogical cycle-Notice, Investigate, Interpret, Practice, and Produce-is proposed. The model combines teacher-prepared concordance materials with guided student corpus consultation and medically situated speaking and writing tasks. It is designed for English for Medical Purposes courses, including contexts in which learners have mixed English proficiency and limited prior experience with corpus tools. The article concludes that corpus-informed DDL can make terminology instruction more systematic, authentic, and learner-centered while complementing, rather than replacing, explicit teacher guidance.
