Classification of religious compositions in the wall paintings of the Bukhara oasis (varakhsha, paykend, uchquloq)

Annotatsiya

This article analyzes examples of mural painting identified at the Early Medieval archaeological sites of Varakhsha, Paykend, and Uchquloq. The study examines the thematic content, artistic and stylistic features, and iconographic characteristics of the preserved compositions on the walls of the Red and Eastern Halls of the Varakhsha settlement. The mural paintings of Paykend and Uchquloq are comparatively analyzed with the paintings of Varakhsha, revealing the development of courtly and ceremonial, religious and ritual, as well as battle and hunting motifs in Early Medieval Sogdian art. The results of the study demonstrate that these mural paintings represent an important source for the study of the art, culture, religious beliefs, and court life of Central Asia during the Early Middle Ages.
