Introduction. Oral communication competence in student interpreters can be defined as the capacity to produce intelligible, appropriate, and strategically managed spoken discourse that fulfills a communicative purpose under constraints typical of interpreting tasks. The mechanism through which this competence manifests is an interaction between linguistic resources, pragmatic choices, discourse organization, and self-monitoring, all activated under time pressure and audience demands. For example, when a student interpreter reformulates a complex source message, the listener’s comprehension depends not only on lexical accuracy but also on turn management, prosodic emphasis, and repair strategies that preserve coherence. Empirically, interpreter-training programs report that oral performance ratings often show substantial rater variability, with studies in performance assessment frequently finding inter-rater agreement in the moderate range when constructs are underspecified, commonly around intraclass correlations near 0.50 to 0.70 depending on scale quality and rater preparation. Scientifically, this indicates a construct-representation problem: if oral competence is treated as a single global trait, measurement noise increases and feedback becomes too vague to guide learning, which aligns with validity arguments stressing the need for explicit construct modeling in language performance assessment [1; 2].
