Semantic productivity of genetically unrelated lexical homonyms

This article presents a comparative study of the semantic productivity of genetically unrelated lexical homonyms in English and Uzbek. Semantic productivity is understood as the ability of one formal linguistic unit to express more than one meaning, with particular attention to the number and semantic scope of the meanings represented by a homonym. The study analyses 204 homonyms belonging to 29 homonymic series in English and 71 homonyms belonging to 16 homonymic series in Uzbek. The analysis identifies three levels of semantic productivity in English: high, medium and low. The high level includes homonyms with 26-34 meanings, the medium level includes homonyms with 12-23 meanings, and the low level includes homonyms with 1-11 meanings. In Uzbek, the high level is represented by homonyms with 3-4 meanings, the medium level by homonyms with two meanings, and the low level by homonyms with one meaning. Particular attention is paid to internal semantic branching, as well as to archaic, terminological, idiomatic, figurative and variant-specific meanings recorded in dictionaries. The findings demonstrate that the semantic productivity of genetically unrelated homonyms is closely connected with historical language development, interlingual contacts and lexicographic principles.
