The article examines the semantic and etymological features of genetikally related and genetikally unrelated lexical homonyms in English and Uzbek from a comparative-typological perspective. Particular attention is paid to the distinction between the formal identity of homonymous units and their etymological origin and semantic relationship. Genetikally related homonyms are viewed as lexical units originating from the same etymological source and preserving a certain degree of semantic relationship, whereas genetikally unrelated homonyms originate from different etymological sources and coincide formally as a result of accidental phonetic or structural convergence. The study considers the role of language contact, borrowing, semantic change, and substrate, superstrate and adstrate processes in the formation of homonymous lexical units in English and Uzbek. The findings demonstrate that genetikally unrelated homonyms in English have become relatively well integrated into the lexical system, while many corresponding units in Uzbek retain more explicit features of interlingual borrowing.
