This article provides a historical and ethnographic analysis of the migration of the Dasht-i Qipchaq Uzbeks from Dasht-i Qipchaq to Transoxiana and Khwarazm in the second half of the 15th and early 16th centuries, as well as its impact on the ethno-political landscape of the region. Particular attention is paid to the arrival of nomadic tribes and clans led by Muhammad Shaybani Khan in Transoxiana and to their interaction and integration with the local settled and semi-nomadic Turkic-Iranian population during the reign of Ulugh Beg and the subsequent Timurid period. The article examines the transformation of the ethnonym “Uzbek” from a political category into an ethnic concept, changes in the tribal and clan composition of the population, and the formation of a new system of statehood. These processes are examined on the basis of primary sources, including Fazlullah ibn Ruzbihan Isfahani’s Mihman-nama-yi Bukhara, Hafiz-i Tanish Bukhari’s Abdullanama, and Zahir al-Din Muhammad Babur’s Baburnama, as well as the studies of modern historians and scholars of source studies, including V.V. Barthold, A.Yu. Yakubovsky, C.E. Bosworth, R.D. McChesney, and Y. Bregel.
