This article examines the migration and settlement of the Dungan population in the Semirechye Region during the period of the Russian Empire and their role in shaping the region’s ethnic composition. The relevance of the study lies in the need to reconstruct the history of the Dungans on the basis of archival sources. The research employs the principles of historicism, comparative analysis, and archival source criticism. The source base includes materials from the National Archives of Uzbekistan, as well as statistical and administrative records of the Russian Empire. The study reconstructs the administrative and economic circumstances surrounding the allocation of an 8,000-ruble loan to the Dungan community of Nikolayevskaya village for the construction of an irrigation canal from the Chu River. It also highlights the Dungans’ traditional expertise in irrigation and agriculture. The scholarly contribution of the study lies in introducing previously underutilized archival documents into scholarly circulation, while its practical significance consists in expanding the source base for research on the ethnic and socioeconomic history of the Semirechye Region.
