Chronicle as a Form of Organizing Biographical Time in Russian and Uzbek Documentary Prose of the Early Twenty-First Century

This article examines the chronicle as a form of artistic organization of biographical time in Russian and Uzbek documentary prose of the early twenty-first century. The study focuses on P. Basinsky’s Leo Tolstoy: Escape from Paradise (Лев Толстой: Бегство из рая) and Naim Karimov’s documentary-biographical novel Maqsud Shayxzoda. Drawing on comparative-typological analysis, the article examines the principles of chronological arrangement of documentary material, the functions of precise dates, and changes in the temporal density of the narrative. It is established that in P. Basinsky’s work, the chronicle structure is concentrated around a single central event—L. N. Tolstoy’s departure—and provides a temporal framework for heterogeneous documentary sources. In Naim Karimov’s work, the chronicle movement encompasses Shayxzoda’s biographical trajectory and connects his individual fate with historical time; in episodes depicting repression, temporal detail intensifies to the point of a sequential day-by-day recording of events. The comparison reveals different modes of artistic organization of biographical time in Russian and Uzbek documentary-biographical prose.
