COMPLIMENT RESPONSES IN ENGLISH AND UZBEK: A CROSS-CULTURAL PRAGMALINGUISTIC PERSPECTIVE

Abstract Compliments and the ways people respond to them have long attracted the attention of researchers in pragmatics and cross-cultural linguistics because they reflect the interaction between language, culture, and social behavior. Although compliments are typically intended to express admiration, approval, or solidarity, responses to them differ noticeably from one language and culture to another. Such differences arise from culturally shared values, social expectations, politeness conventions, and speakers' communicative intentions. This study explores the pragmalinguistic features of compliment responses in English and Uzbek from a comparative cross-cultural perspective. It examines both the similarities and the differences in the linguistic realization of compliment responses and considers how cultural values shape speakers' pragmatic decisions. The analysis is based on authentic examples drawn from literary texts, spoken interaction, and digital communication using a qualitative comparative approach. The findings show that English speakers more frequently accept compliments directly through expressions of gratitude or agreement. In contrast, Uzbek speakers more often prefer modesty-based responses, including self-denial, praise deflection, and reciprocal compliments. These differences reflect broader cultural orientations toward individualism and collectivism, as well as distinct politeness conventions. By comparing compliment-response behavior in English and Uzbek, the study broadens current research in pragmalinguistics and offers further insight into the relationship between language use and culture. The findings may also be useful for intercultural communication, translation practice, and the teaching of English in multilingual educational settings.
