Annotatsiya

Background. Metabolic syndrome is one of the major metabolic disorders leading to the development of subclinical changes in retinal microcirculation and neuroretinal structures. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCT-A) enable early detection of these alterations. Objective. To analyze the diagnostic significance of OCT and OCT-A biomarkers in retinal changes associated with metabolic syndrome. Materials and methods. Scientific publications published between 2020 and 2026 and indexed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases were analyzed. Results and conclusion. Reduced macular thickness, thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer, decreased capillary density, and enlargement of the foveal avascular zone were identified as the main biomarkers of metabolic syndrome. OCT and OCT-A are highly informative noninvasive methods for the early diagnosis and prediction of metabolic retinopathy.
