Трахома, которую сегодня можно отнести к группе забытых болезней, до недавнего времени была одной из основных причин, приводивших к слепоте в Узбекистане, как и в целом в регионе. Статья посвящена истории борьбы с трахомой со слов А. Х. Шараповой, непосредственного участника борьбы с этой болезнью в семидесятых годах прошлого столетия в нашей республике. В тот период проводились беспрецедентные организационные мероприятия по поголовному обследованию и лечению населения усилиями отрядов офтальмологов, которые направлялись в очаги заболевания. Непосредственно на местах проводилась самоотверженная работа по обследованию и лечению больных, готовились кадры медицинских сестер, фельдшеров, врачей, создавались трахоматозные диспансеры, в конечном итоге в 1964 году трахома в Узбекистане была ликвидирована.
