KIDNEY MORPHOLOGY IN 6-MONTH-OLD WHITE-BREED RATS IN IRON DEFICIENCY

This study is devoted to the study of the effect of iron deficiency on the morphological and morphometric parameters of the kidneys of 6-month-old male white outbred rats. The experimental model used iron-deficient diet for 3 months, and general histological and morphometric examinations were performed. The results showed compensatory dilation of afferent and efferent arterioles, hypertrophy of glomerular structures, expansion of the Shumlyansky-Bowman capsule lumen, and thickening of the basement membrane in the capsule. A significant decrease in the height of the epithelial layer of the proximal and distal convoluted tubules, expansion of the tubular lumen, and initial signs of fibrosis in the interstitial tissue were detected. A decrease in glomerular density was noted without changing the total number of nephrons. The results obtained prove that iron deficiency leads to the formation of a hypoxic-metabolic type of kidney damage, as well as the development of early tubulointerstitial remodeling.
