Simultaneous interpretation (SI) is widely recognized as an exceptionally demanding mental activity, as it forces the human brain to manage multiple linguistic tasks at the same time under strict time constraints. Drawing on Daniel Gile’s Effort Models and John Sweller’s Cognitive Load Theory, this study examines how interpreters distribute their limited attention and maintain information in their working memory during live translation. Following a qualitative content-analysis approach based on Seeber’s taxonomy, the paper identifies major linguistic triggers that cause mental overload, such as fast speech rates, dense technical vocabulary, and structural differences in grammar between languages. The results indicate that high-quality interpretation relies more on the active coordination and quick clearing of working memory than on basic language fluency or passive memory capacity. To manage stress and prevent communication errors, professional interpreters use active defense techniques, including context-based tracking and probability-based anticipation. Based on these findings, the paper suggests a new direction for advanced interpreter education, recommending that universities include dual-task drills, memory training, and stress-management simulations to directly strengthen students’ cognitive control.
