Sports commentary constitutes a distinctive register of spoken and written discourse that combines real-time narration, evaluative language, technical terminology, and cultural symbolism. This article investigates the core linguistic characteristics of sports commentary — including lexical density, ellipsis, deixis, metaphor, code-switching, and pragmatic immediacy — and examines the specific challenges encountered when translating such discourse into Uzbek. Drawing on corpus-based analysis of televised football, basketball, and traditional Uzbek sports commentaries, as well as qualitative analysis of bilingual broadcast materials, the study identifies four primary translation difficulties: terminological asymmetry, cultural non-equivalence, time-constrained adaptation, and stylistic register mismatch. The findings demonstrate that effective English-to-Uzbek sports translation requires not only bilingual competence but also tactical knowledge, cultural sensitivity, and pragmatic flexibility. The study proposes a functional equivalence framework adapted to the sociolinguistic context of Uzbek media, contributing to the emerging field of sports translation studies in Central Asia.
