Atherothrombotic damage to the extracranial arteries is one of the most important medical and social problems of our time, being the leading cause of the development of ischemic cerebrovascular events. According to the World Health Organization, cerebrovascular diseases rank second among the causes of death worldwide, leading to the death of more than 6.2 million people annually. In the structure of all strokes, ischemic disorders of cerebral circulation make up 80-85%, while atherosclerotic damage to the extracranial segments of the carotid and vertebral arteries is the cause of stroke development in 15-20% of cases.
