The medulla oblongata represents the lower part of the brain stem, which is a direct continuation of the spinal cord. This relatively small part of the central nervous system is critical for maintaining vital body functions, such as breathing, cardiac activity, and blood pressure regulation. The medulla oblongata also serves as an essential conductive pathway connecting the spinal cord with the overlying parts of the brain.
