Post-Emergency Indian English fiction critically portrays the politics of slum clearance and urban beautification implemented during the Internal Emergency (1975–1977) in India. Under the guise of development, discipline, and modernization, thousands of poor people were displaced from cities, their shelters demolished, and their lives destabilized. This article examines the representation of beautification politics and urban displacement in A Fine Balance, Midnight's Children and Unforeseen Desires. The study argues that slum clearance in these novels functions as a political strategy aimed at eliminating visible poverty and preserving elite social order rather than genuinely improving the condition of the poor. Through the portrayal of forced eviction, demolition drives, police violence, and displacement, the novels expose the inhuman dimensions of urban modernization during the Emergency. The article further analyses how beautification politics transformed poor citizens into disposable subjects whose existence was viewed as a threat to the image of progress and development.
