The Internal Emergency (1975–1977) in India witnessed one of the most controversial population control programmes in modern Indian history. Post-Emergency Indian English fiction critically portrays the coercive sterilization campaigns, forced vasectomy operations, and state-sponsored violence imposed upon poor and powerless citizens during the period. This article examines the representation of sterilization and population control in A Fine Balance, Midnight's Children and Unforeseen Desires. The study argues that sterilization in these novels functions not merely as a demographic policy but as a political instrument intended to discipline, suppress, and eliminate vulnerable sections of society. Through the depiction of forced vasectomy camps, police brutality, humiliation, and physical mutilation, these narratives expose the authoritarian tendencies of the Emergency regime and the suffering experienced by lower class people. The article further analyses how the novels associate sterilization with fear, social hierarchy, and the destruction of democratic freedom.
