The article examines the role of anthroponyms in the scholarly legacy of the distinguished Soviet and Russian ethnographer, Doctor of Historical Sciences Balkis Khalilovna Karmysheva. Throughout her career B. Karmysheva consistently treated personal names, nicknames, and genealogical anthroponyms as ethnographic evidence for reconstructing the ethnic history of the Uzbek people. The analysis centers on her article “Traces of Medieval Ethnonyms and Anthroponyms in Uzbek Genealogies (as, kyshlik, urus)” and her monograph “Essays on the Ethnic History of the Southern Regions of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan”. The study demonstrates how the author revealed mechanisms by which medieval anthroponyms-ethnonyms persisted within Uzbek genealogical structures, drawing on both written historical sources and field data. Her approach is compared with the anthroponymic studies of E. Begmatov, A.G. Gafurov, V.A. Nikonov, and T. Nafasov.
