This article examines the mission of Alexander Burnes to the Emirate of Bukhara in 1832 within the context of the complex geopolitical processes that emerged in Central Asia in the first half of the nineteenth century, using a comprehensive historical-analytical approach. The study analyzes not only Burnes’ official diplomatic objectives, but also his covert intelligence activities, the course of negotiations at the court of Nasrullah Khan, as well as the information he collected on the political system, economic life, and military potential of the emirate. Based on Burnes’ observations, the article reveals the features of the Bukhara Emirate’s cautious foreign policy strategy and examines its trade routes, caravan system, customs practices, and the specifics of its international trade relations. Particular attention is paid to the connection of this mission with the strategic interests of the British Empire in Central Asia and its role as one of the early stages of the “Great Game.” The findings demonstrate that the information gathered by Alexander Burnes was significant not only for the diplomatic practice of the time but also for subsequent historiography. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of the foreign policy and economic development of the Bukhara Emirate in the early nineteenth century.
